Research investigating classic psychedelics such as psilocybin as anti-addictive agents began in the 1950s but was terminated in the 1970s due to sociopolitical concerns and misunderstandings of risks. In recent years, the interest in the potential of psilocybin for the treatment of various psychiatric disorders has increased dramatically. This presentation reviews ongoing research by Dr. Hendricks in this emerging field. Dr. Hendricks presents preliminary observations from an ongoing double-blind placebo-controlled trial of psilocybin in the treatment of cocaine use disorder. This presentation will include a description of the treatment paradigm, safety procedures, outcomes, and potential mediators of effectiveness.
Peter Hendricks is a clinical psychologist with expertise in the treatment of addiction. A native of Washington DC, he currently lives in Birmingham, AL, where he is an Associate Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. There he is conducting a pilot study of psilocybin-facilitated psychotherapy for cocaine dependence, the first such study of its kind.
